Entry 25 - Illwind Keep

Entry 25 - Illwind Keep

While traveling south toward Freeholm, I found myself within eyeshot of the fabled Illwind Keep, on the border between Keston and El'myrr. The place has a notorious reputation, but as an adventurer, I am not one to shy away from a challenge.

I approached the castle cautiously, keeping an eye out for any signs of danger. The keep was massive, with towering stone walls and an ominous aura that seemed to hang over it. The air was heavy with an eerie silence, and I couldn't help but feel that I was being watched. My mind began to dig into the history of this place as I neared the gates.

It was once a key position of defense during the Myrrian civil war, and exchanged hands on more than one occasion. Then one morning an attacking force of rebels rode up to it to find every last man, woman, and child within had died by unknown means, not a mark on their bodies. They were left to be found by Myrrian loyalists and the place obtained an ominous reputation almost instantly.

As I entered the castle, I was struck by the eerie stillness within. The stone walls were covered in a thick layer of moss, and the wooden beams had long since rotted away. The only sound was the echo of my footsteps as I made my way through the dark halls. Despite the rumors of danger and missing treasure seekers, I pressed on, determined to uncover the secrets hidden within the castle's walls. I searched room after room, but all I found were decaying furniture and cobweb-covered walls.

As I reached the great hall, I quickly noticed there was a strange mound in the center of the room. Approaching carefully, my torchlight revealed the mound to be a careful pile of human skulls about 1 and half meters tall. The hairs on my arms and neck stood up immediately and a great sense of unease swept over me. I suddenly took note of a soft moaning sound, like distant wind mixed with mournful whispers. It only took another moment to realize the sound was coming from within the skull pile. I quickly made my exit, feeling grateful to be alive. The Darkwind Keep may be filled with treasure, but the cost of uncovering its secrets may be too great. I will not be returning to this haunted keep and will instead leave its secrets to the ghosts that may haunt its corridors.
